home What To Do at Home

Offer fresh, cool water in a clean bowl. Try different locations — some dogs prefer not to eat and drink in the same spot. Add a small amount of low-sodium chicken broth to make water more appealing. For wet food, mix in extra water. Check gums for moistness. If gums are dry or pale, this is an emergency.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check if my dog is dehydrated?

Gently pinch the skin at the back of the neck — it should spring back immediately. Dry or sticky gums, sunken eyes, and lethargy are also signs of dehydration.

Can a dog go a day without water?

No — dogs should never go more than 24 hours without water. Dehydration can cause organ damage within a day and can be fatal within 2–3 days.

Why won't my dog drink from a new bowl?

Dogs are sensitive to smell. New bowls (especially plastic) can have an off-putting odor. Try a stainless steel or ceramic bowl and wash it thoroughly before first use.

Is it normal for dogs to drink less in winter?

Yes — dogs may drink slightly less in cold weather when not exercising as much. But a dramatic drop in intake is still worth monitoring.
